Random Tip: How To Remove Permanent Marker from Wood

Sharing, just in case it helps save you a heart attack !
I was working on my Aztec Table Runner, and I convinced my lazy self that I'd be careful and would not Need to use newspaper for protection. Ahh well... I got permanent marker on my pretty table. I have had three different guests having tea with me on that table after that...but I let them assume that the child must have done it...just like he messes up the rest of the house.. splashes on the wall, my dirty oven, expired yogurt in the fridge..the kid does it all..I like to believe. Don't judge me yet!
Here's what I found works best, without damaging the finished Wood :

Chintz: My sip of Inspiration

Today's post isn't a DIY project. Its more of a mini research on my current interest in patterns and designs. It all started with a  present from my mother which I recieved last Sunday.

Its a charming set of tea cups with a Chintz floral patterrn. I was interested in finding out more about this classic design. When I opened the box, my husband's first reaction was " ah old english styled cups " the sort of nationality we quickly fraternize things in...like if you see bamboos, you think China, if you see damask you think Islamic art/ damuscus...that kind of link up.
'Chuck out the chintz', exhorted Ikea, the well-known Swedish furniture retailer, a few years back in a needling advertising campaign. They wanted to persuade us to abandon old-fashioned floral Patterns in favour of cool, modern Scandinavian style. And for a while, they succeeded. But it's not easy to get the British to abandon something they've loved for 350 years.

In Pakistan, a leading clothing brand Khaadi has launched an entire collection for Spring 2013 using the Chintz theme. (P.S momsie was in a generous mood and sent a Khaadi suit too!)

I always thought that these florals that are various variations of the chintz originate from the British...not knowing that it actually was develeped right where I come from! The Sub-Continent!
"When we think of chintz we generally think of English country-house interiors: rooms full of large-scale, colourful roses and wildflowers printed on the glazed cotton first manufactured in Victorian times. But chintz is much older than that and actually not British at all. The word chintz was originally used by the East India Company and is a corruption of the north Indian 'chint', a word meaning to sprinkle or spray. "
Enter: wikipedia.
Chinz designs are mostly European patterns loosely derived from the style of Indian designs themselves reflecting, via Mughal art, decorative traditions in Islamic art such as the arabesque

Chintz was originally a woodblock printed, painted or stained calico produced in India from 1600 to 1800 and popular for bed covers, quilts and draperies. Around 1600, Portuguese and Dutch traders were bringing examples of Indian chintz into Europe
During the late 17th century, French and English mills grew concerned, as they could not make chintz. In 1686 the French declared a ban on all chintz imports. In 1720 England's Parliament enacted a law that forbade "the Use and Warings in Apparel of imported chintz, and also its use or Wear in or about any Bed, Chair, Cushion or other Household furniture".

Originally invented in India, chintz became an interior design staple in 17th and 18th century English country houses. Now it’s back, says Hugh St Clair

Hand Printed Aztec Table Runner

Did you know that cacao was first discovered by the aztecs? Thats enough reason for me to love them. Moreover, their artistic flair is being echoed today in so many ways. The aztec tribal print is THE new chevron.

While hubbs was away for a week, I had plenty of time to do this table runner. All materials were on hand and it took me well over 2 hours to make this on trend runner.

I had this really thick and neutral coloured fabric left over from my storage boxes which you can find HERE.

I measured my table and cut it to size. For the width I added an extra inch, half inch fold over on each side to make a neat edge. I used hot glue to turn the edges.

All you need is a permanent marker, or what most people may call a 'sharpie'.

I first made a template out of card board. A basic triangle.
I traced it on the edges all the way with a thinner marker.
Note: A quicker and less strenous way would be to stamp the triangles on..using paint. I avoided paint because With the limited work space that I have..letting this long runner to sit and dry peacefully wasn't going to happen. I have a two year old.

Plus, I like the worn out kind of uneven patchy look of the triangles. Gives it the real feal.
Fill in the outllines with a thick marker...go on and on and on.. It can get boring but wait till you see the final product !

I love it for its earthy simplicity. I plan to use bold red placemats with this runner.

Tribal Triangles: Choker Necklace

I am not a necklace buyer, I am a rings and bracelets sort of person. I did wear some long necklaces during my university days but after getting married I had to shift to gold chains, sapphires, rubies and diamonds for that matter! Grown up stuff thats passed on to the bride by the parents :)

Lets quit the goldie talk and get back to the frugal self that I really am !

I have a newfound love for chockers and bold neck pieces. Mumsie has sent me a beautiful embroidered dress and I wanted to turn it into a complete outfit by adding a piece of complenting jewellery. I liked pieces like these:

They were at a OK price..about €12-€15 each..hmmm will I be wearing that more than 5 times- not sure > move to the sad shelf with items on sale > ahhaa! Find a similar piece but in a wierd orange snake print > price tag > €3 ! Grab it > pay and run back home!

I stripped the orange snake off its skin by using my nail polish remover. There was a decent looking necklace under it.
To customise it for my dress I tapped it and painted some hot pink triangles with nail polish! Ta da!

Bargain turned into DIY made to match dress jewellery!

German Quark Dessert

This dessert beats Nigella in terms of its short prep time and high calorie count scale. Its an instant show stopper after a dinner party. I would say it is self invented and pleases the guests everytime.

Poor picture quality due to kitchen rush hours!

Lets go layer by layer into this sinful bowl of pleasure shall we;)

Layer one: Crushed Golden Ring Biscuits, pressed firmly at the bottom of a serving dish. I skip using melted butter here as these biscuits already have tons of butter in them.

Layer Two: Diced Banana

Layer Three: Strawberry Quark, spread with a spatula.

Layer Four: Generous sprinkling of mixed dry fruit

Layer Five: Sweetened Fruit Cocktail

Layer Six: optional biscuits/ apple/ chocolate count your own sins!

Layer Seven: Well beaten, soft n snowy cream. Beat well with powdered sugar to taste.

Finish it off with a chocolate drizzle or moulded choc leaves and some real spring flowers!

Present with a disclaimer..Any Layers added to the waist are not the host's responsability.

Guten apetit!

Pleasant Surprise: Carrot Cake

It has been a great sunny week here in Munich. We took a trip to Sttutgart to visit family and to collect a bündle of fabulous goodies my mother had sent for us. Only an expat can tell the out of this world happiness to recieve a parcel from back home. So moma sent some beautiful dresses, shoes, homemade spice mix for back ache ( will be sharing recipe here ) for hubbs, herbal tea, tea whitener everyday ( whythey no make it here! Why ) my favorite sugared fennel seeds in a pixie tin..see tidly bidly stuff you can't ask anyone else to send to far far away places like Germany :( i had a happy week. :)))

We invited a new neighbour of ours over the weekend and I tried a new recipe for dessert after dinner.I tried Nigella's carrot cake

Here's a quick recipe:

This recepie is for cupcakes, but I made a small cake following the same amounts of ingredients.
Took me well over 40 mins to bake it.
I filled the cake with froting in between two layers and then just roughly frosted the cake with a spatula. I have seen some really cute carrot cakes with little marzipan carrots on them. That would look great but since I had a dinner to prepare too..I was short on time, used just a tiny bit of orange zest.

I would use less oil next time. Forgot to take a picture of the sliced cake. It tasted surprisingly good.

Chirpy Pinboard

Its almost the end of Febuary and don't you just feel spring in the air! Or maybe not..here in Bavaria the only hints of spring can be seen in display Windows at the malls ! In real time, this is what I woke up to this morning:

Uh oh false illusions of spring burried under heaps of snow.
...but we do know that its somewhere just around the corner. The birds are clearing their throats!
Here's my old autum-looking pinboard (now that we're talking seasons)

...and here'S my new freüling inspired chirpy little notice board!

Floral fabric tape on the edges, scrapbook paper for the board and some cute lady-bird Pins !
